Best Private Hospitals in Pakistan — A Guide for Diaspora Families

Why This Guide Exists

When a family member needs hospital care in Pakistan, diaspora families face an impossible choice: which hospital do you trust? The gap between the best and worst facilities in Pakistan is enormous — and making the wrong call can have serious consequences.

This guide gives you an honest assessment of the leading private hospitals in Pakistan's major cities, what they are genuinely good at, and what to watch out for.

What Makes a Good Private Hospital in Pakistan?

Before we get to the list, here is what actually matters:

  • Specialist availability — Is the consultant you need on staff or just visiting?
  • Investigation quality — Do they have in-house CT, MRI, and pathology, or do they send samples out?
  • ICU capability — What is the nurse-to-patient ratio? Do they have a ventilator per bed?
  • Transparency — Will they speak to family abroad? Do they provide written summaries?
  • Accreditation — JCI (Joint Commission International) accreditation is the gold standard internationally

Lahore

Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital

Best for: Cancer diagnosis, oncology surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy

Pakistan's most internationally respected hospital. Founded by Imran Khan, it operates on a partially charitable model (40% of patients treated free). JCI accredited. Their pathology and radiology departments are considered the best in the country for oncology.

Honest assessment: Exceptional for cancer. Not a general hospital — do not admit a non-cancer patient here expecting the same standard.

Evercare Hospital Lahore (formerly Hameed Latif Hospital)

Best for: Cardiology, cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, general medicine

Part of the Evercare Group (international healthcare). Modern facility, JCI accreditation in progress. Good intensivist coverage in the ICU. Dr. Rao Taimoor Hameed Khan — founder of EmergencyInPakistan.com — practices here.

Honest assessment: Among the best all-round private hospitals in Lahore for complex cases. Strong cardiology and neurology departments.

Doctors Hospital

Best for: General surgery, orthopaedics, maternity

Well-established private hospital in Lahore. Good surgical outcomes. Less strong on subspecialty medicine compared to Evercare or Shaukat Khanum.

Services Hospital (Public)

Best for: Emergency trauma, burns, complex surgery — if you cannot afford private

The best public hospital in Lahore. Overwhelmed but the consultant staff are often excellent. If your family member needs emergency surgery and cost is a serious constraint, Services Hospital is where experienced government-sector consultants work.

Karachi

Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH)

Best for: Almost everything — it is the benchmark

AKUH is the best hospital in Pakistan by most metrics. JCI accredited, internationally trained staff, strong nursing ratios, genuine electronic medical records, and a culture of transparency that is rare in Pakistan. If you can afford it and the case warrants it, Aga Khan is the answer.

Honest assessment: Expensive but genuinely world-class. If a family member has a complex or serious condition in Karachi, start here.

Liaquat National Hospital

Best for: General medicine, surgery, affordable private care

A respected mid-tier private hospital in Karachi. Not at AKUH's level but significantly better than most. Good for straightforward admissions.

South City Hospital

Best for: Cardiology, cardiac catheterisation

Strong cardiac unit. Worth knowing if your family member has a heart condition in Karachi.

Islamabad / Rawalpindi

Shifa International Hospital

Best for: General medicine, surgery, maternity, cardiac

The flagship private hospital of the twin cities. Large facility, broad specialty coverage, reasonable prices for the quality. Good ICU.

Islamabad Diagnostic Centre (IDC)

Best for: Diagnostics — radiology, pathology, lab work

If you need high-quality scans or lab results, IDC is where Islamabad's top consultants send their patients. Not a full hospital — purely investigations.

One Final Note

Hospital quality in Pakistan — as everywhere — depends heavily on the individual consultant. A great surgeon at a mid-tier hospital often outperforms an average surgeon at a top-tier one. Our team can help you identify the right specialist for a specific condition, not just the right hospital.
